Travel is such an informative aspect of our studio’s work. Each member of our team enjoys exploring the world, as stories of recent travels are often shared amongst our group. As landscape architects, travel absolutely informs and inspires our work as we are trained to “see” and experience our world through the lens of both a visionary and a technician, observing all aspects of our built, natural, and social environments, continually learning from natural processes and human behavior.
One recent trip to Iceland was a master class in design and human adaptation. When you drive through a town, past homes with front yard swing sets and schools with newly installed playgrounds that have been completely evacuated and now exist under layers of volcanic residue, it stirs an even deeper respect for the absolute power of our natural world and the urgent need to work with her, not despite her.
Iceland offers a range of built and natural vibrancy from the streets of Reykjavik with its fragrant bakeries, to the countryside’s stark land formations, brilliant lagoons, dynamic waterfalls, breathtaking black sand beaches, and sprawling green pastures (during the summer months!).
